You want to turn your creative skills or a prized collection of artifacts into a source of income – possibly selling them online. Great place to start. But what are the things you need to consider before it turns into an instant nightmare?

When it comes to launching your own business, there are a few things you need to consider. Some of these steps can be relatively straightforward – like establishing your online presence through social media … probably critical too. But there are some others that could be tricky or aren’t obvious at the start. Some probably won’t be for a while to come – as you slowly grow your business. In today’s episode, I want to talk about some of those considerations.

Let’s start with online presence. You definitely need to ensure you have a great online presence via social media – be it Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, Youtube or the likes. But then, would you need a website of your own? Would you enable e-commerce capabilities on it? Or do you use existing online marketplaces to start with? If you choose to start your own website, what would be its associated costs? How would you drive traffic to your website? What would be your marketing strategy and what sort of marketing budget would you require – even if it is just to promote your presence on social media?

Associated with that decision would be how you collect money from your customers. Do you subscribe to your own payment solution or rely on simply cash on delivery? Such decisions may impact your business by limiting your potential client base or options for delivery partners who would handle COD.

That takes me to the point of delivery partners. What market are you trying to serve and what options for delivery are available there? Would you deliver interstate or even overseas maybe? Will you be able to negotiate delivery charges especially at the beginning when you may not have the volume of orders?

What about a trade license? For certain types of products – it may not be an option. For example, in UAE, if you want to sell consumable products or products that contain chemicals, you need the right type of license to start with. For other product types, you may not necessarily need your own license until you reach a certain revenue point – as that relates to whether you need to register for VAT – which is another process in itself.

If you need your own trade license, you may need to also consider a registered address and contacts customers may reach you on. How do you demonstrate credibility – especially to new customers who haven’t been referred or not familiar with your brand? How do you build your online trust so that customers won’t hesitate to provide their credit card information to your website?

Would you need to consider legal aspects? What sort of agreements do you need to work with your partners, suppliers or distribution agency? Would you require coverage for insurance? What about customer returns or breakages or dealing with customer satisfaction issues?

Costs! How much each of these considerations would cost you if you attempted to do it yourself?

This is where mumsbuzzar comes in … to give you a leg up on most of these considerations to get you started. So that you can focus on building your own brand identity online and drive traffic to a site which can take care of organic traffic, online presence, payment and distribution solutions, marketing, legal among other things.
