Mumpreneur is a term used to describe a lady or woman taking care of her kids and running a business simultaneously. Added to the Collins Dictionary in 2011, the term mumpreneur is often attached to stories of working women who have managed to strike a balance between being a mum and having a career or running a business.

Some women are launching big online businesses centred around motherhood and parenting. Others are starting home-based businesses, such as candle-making and consulting, where they work from home while caring for their families.

The Rise Of Mumprenuers

For a long time, the image of an exhausted woman with children clinging to her legs with unwashed dishes in the sink has been the picture that comes to mind when you think of a non-working mum or a mother that does not have a job. Being a mum rarely accommodated the image of having an expensive home office, let alone having access to state-of-the-art gadgets to run a business.

However, today young mums are going against the restrictive traditional gender roles by turning to the digital world to explore a wide range of opportunities. And at the same time displaying motherhood with a badge of pride.

The rise of technology in the 20th century has seen the rise of career-driven women who are financially independent. Many are forgoing the traditional way of life and choosing to live on their terms. These mums are starting businesses, commanding boardrooms, and fighting for equal pay. However, today many are using their motherhood journeys to catapult their careers. Like their peers in careers, these mums have their label of mumpreneurs.

Mums And Social Media

A study by Refinery 29, a female-focused website, found that 82 per cent of mothers on social media mention their parental status or have a photo posted of their family. Motherhood has slowly become a significant buzzword on many women’s profiles. Many of them are reaping the benefits through sales, brand endorsements, increased Instagram followers or increased business awareness.

The United Arab Emirates is no exception to the findings. With the world’s leading social media and smartphone penetration, according to Hootsuite and We Are Social, many mumpreneurs in the country use Instagram and Facebook to promote their lifestyles and products. For most social media-savvy mums, being a full-time mum is an occupation of choice in the UAE. This is often promoted across social media sites through carefully curated content.

Why Are Women Choosing To Be Mumpreneurs?

For some women in the UAE, it means they get to maintain a solid connection to the workforce while having time to take care of their kids. While for others, it means creating an opportunity to be their boss. Many women struggle to juggle a career with managerial significance and motherhood. However, technological changes have made life much easier for mothers in the UAE since they can now work from home without having to move around.

Some of the reasons why a lot of women are deciding to become mumpreneurs include:

  • The rising cost of childcare.
  • In search of flexibility and independence.
  • They need to be their boss.
  • To experiment with their creativity and develop new ways to make money.
  • The ability to work from home or anywhere they would like.

The rise and improvement in mobile technology have made it easier for mumpreneurs to run their businesses and keep track of any changes in the market. Technology has also made it easy for mumpreneurs to learn different ways to pivot their businesses and increase revenue.
